Explore & Relax at Arcachon Bay
Dip your toes in the Atlantic Ocean, and see seaside France at it’s finest!
Arcachon Bay, Bordeaux’s coastal getaway, is a seaside town snuggled between the Atlantic and historic Bordeaux center. It’s a place where the ocean blends seamlessly with the land’s rich harmonies.
Arcachon Bay is a maze of oyster bed farms dragging the gentle rise of the ocean waves, that has long been a refuge for French maritime fishermen. Here, sea-faring traditions have unfolded over the centuries, feeding and shaping the lives of the locals. This coastal area is rich in stories of fishermen, oyster harvesters, and vine cultivators.
Located on the Atlantic coast in southwestern France, Arcachon evolved from prehistoric settlements to a charming seaside town with a rich history.
In antiquity, the region was home to the Bituriges Vivisci tribe, but for much of the Middle Ages, Arcachon Bay remained a sparsely populated area with a few fishing villages.
Its real transformation began in the 19th century when its therapeutic sea air drew attention, leading to its establishment as a health resort. The completion of the Bordeaux railway in 1857 amplified its appeal, drawing the French elite and marking the beginning of the town’s Belle Époque architectural era.
Arcachon played roles in both World Wars, especially under German occupation during WWII.
Today, it stands as a major tourist destination, celebrated for its beaches, oyster harvesting, and the iconic nearby Dune du Pilat.
Speaking of must-see experiences, the mountainous Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, offers striking views of the tranquil waters on one side and the vibrant pine forest on the other. It’s a natural break of earth and wind and water, and an epic view of the entire bay.
Locals Tips and Tricks;
One of our favorite combinations is Arcachon’s fresh oysters with a light, invigorating Bordeaux white! It’s sublime and immerses you in a sea-land flavor fusion that can only be truly appreciated in Arcachon.
Feel the cool, salty air, uncovering the quaint Île aux Oiseaux (Bird Island) and its iconic stilts-huts. Across the bay is the upscale Cap Ferret peninsula, which shows off the sea’s richness and the captivating bay sights.
Arcachon Bay is the meeting point between land and sea, a place where Bordeaux’s wine treasures meld seamlessly with the ocean’s offerings.
Embarking on a day trip to Arcachon Bay is a great break from Bordeaux overload and an excellent setting to relax with a glass of white wine and delicious seafood at a five-star restaurant in front of the rhythmic waves. It’s no wonder some call it the intertwining of ocean and land, the convergence of flavors, and Bordeaux’s seaside jewel.
